XP Home Ed. SP3 access denied error

S

SO

I have XP Home Edition and have been trying to install the Service Pack 3
(KB936929). I have followed each of the directions from this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 and keep getting the same error
"Access denied." When I try to run the script (which I was sure to label
correctly .cmd), it runs for a few minutes and then I get a bright blue sceen
saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer."

What do I need to do to get this update installed?

Slipstream the SP3 download with the XP CD, burn a new CD, boot from this
new CD and do a repair install.

Google slipstreaming for more info.

Google AutoStreamer for a program that makes it easy to slipstream

Your problem is caused by improperly set permissions on the keys that SP3
needs to change.
You need to fix the reason for the error message whether you install the
update or not.
If you look through the installation log file, you may find more information
about the error.
What is the status of malware detection? Malware could easily change the
permissions.

Well, I have been thoroughly through the requirements and troubleshooting
methods that you suggested, PA. I also attempted to reset the registery but
the response I got was that secedit in not valid command, blah, blah, blah.
I will check out the support you listed. Thanks to everyone for your
suggestions.

When was the last time you did a CHKDSK on that hard disk drive?
May want to do it again.

Also - update your motherboard chipset and network card drivers (at least)
from each othe corresponding hardware device manufacturer's web sites.

Follow that up with a good defragmentation.

Reboot and try the advanced method (from the above article) again...

1. Download and then install the Subinacl.exe file. To download this, visit
the
following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en

Double-click on the downloaded file to install it.

2. Start Notepad.

3.Copy and then paste the following text (7 total lines - your newsreader
might word-wrap) into Notepad.

cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose

4. Save this Notepad file as Reset.cmd (where is unimportant.).

5. Double-click the Reset.cmd file to run the script.
Note: This script file may take a long time to run. Additionally, you have
to run this script as an administrator and reboot afterwards.

6. Install Windows XP SP3.

Stanley, thanks so much for the new suggestions! I would be trying those if
it weren't for the fact that just after midnight last night, the MS chat guy
was finally able to get Service PAck 3 to install. He re-tried all the steps
that Bear listed and got the exact same outcomes as I did. We tried several
different things with the Sub..Acl File but it kept blue screening my
computer.

In the end, I switched to Safe Mode with Networking where he transferred
Dial A fix onto my computer which he then instructed to correct my
registeries and several other files; while downloading the huge-version of
the update. Only after this were we able to successfully update my computer.

It took 3 hours to figure out what was up and fix the issue (including
having to reboot probably 10 times).
