XP (Home) bombs

Can't install apps or run MS applets (MSCONFIG, REGEDIT,
etc.) in WIN XP Home. Symptoms appear virus-related, but
I've checked for all the common viruses and worms
(Blaster, Klez, Welchia, etc.)with Symantec removal
tools. Norton Antivirus won't install, so I can't do a
complete check. I've removed all startup tasks w/MSCONFIG
(it will run in safe mode). Anyone have any ideas?

On a different machine, download the Stinger program from McAfee. Here
is the url: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ . Scan for viruses in Safe
Mode.

Try going to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and using the free online
virus scanner.

Also try installing the free version of AVG from www.grisoft.com and
using it.

Check for spyware type products by downloading, installing, updating
and running AdAware (free) from www.grisoft.com

What is the specific behavior that you see when you try to run
MSCONFIG or to install a new app? Is there any sort of error message
or other problem indicator?

Good luck
