XP freezes when accessing home directory

XP (sp1 and sp2) machines using Office 2003 products accessing the home
directory assigned through AD causes the system to freeze up for several
minutes. Freezing does not occur if accessing the same folder through a drive
mapped via the logon script. The file server is Windows 2000 Server SP4.

A search of MS knowledgebase, Technet, and general Internet search has
turned up nothing. Dell reports that they have had similar calls but have no
solution. Any insight will be appreciated.

Is automatic caching enabled on the share?

I had a similar issue whereby the entire subnet ground to a halt one morning
because I didn't disable this option on the share that contained every users
notes profile <g>

XP has offline files enabled by default.

Thanks for your response. I checked the share, and it set to "Manual Caching
for Documents."
