XP freezes during startup loading

Sorry if I am stupid, but I am a brand new XP user - new computer last night that has already quit working. I press the button to turn on the computer, it starts to load, gets to the desktop where the programs in startup load across the bottom right and freezes. The icons for the programs on the desktop are partially finished loading (they look like they should) while others are identical icons. There is an hourglass showing sand not moving and it never gets any further into the computer than this -I can't run virus, I can't log on to downloan patches, nothing. I have a new paperweight for my desk at this point. Any suggestions?? Much appreciated

No need to be sorry unless it makes you feel better. How
much ram do you have and what is your processor? Make sure
you meet the minimun requirements if you do then that
shouldn't be the issue. Otherwise what is the heat on your
processor, could this be an overheat situation. It sounds
like its loading however slow. I would suggest the
following steps.

1. check to see if you meet minimun requirements
if yes reinstall
if no go to other os such as ME or 98 linux etc.. note xp
has 128 required RAM ME is 64 (if I remember correctly and
98 is either 64 or 32 (I'm not sure on that though, I
woulnd't run xp on less then a AMD 1ghz or Pentium I geuss
would be around 1.4ghz. with atleast 128 mb or ran 256
would probably be useful since with just under 200mb I get
virtual memory issues not sure if that directly relates to
the ammount of ram I have, although I would geuss it does.

2. If you do meet the requirements and reinstall and you
have the same issues then I would suggest trying another
CD if it is available as it may be a corrupt CD. Also
there may be some type of hardware conflict.

I'm geussing on RAM though since its a fresh install. Also
you can press <ctrl> <alt> <del> in newer version of
windows this does not automatically reboot it brings up
the task manager it lets you see your system resource
allocation and running programs, if your at a 100% then
your frozen you can see what is causing the freeze.

By all means contact me via my email (e-mail address removed)
for continued assitance in resolving this.
