XP Firewall settings

I'm using a PC running XP Home SP1. I connect to the Internet via a
cable modem and have the XP firewall enabled. If I check the Advanced
Settings for the firewall, there is a listing of services running on my
network that Internet users can access. The only thing with a check mark is
msmsgs, and it is listed three times, with a different number next to each
one. Is it necessary to leave those program on? What purpose do they
serve?

I unchecked all three msmsgs listings, rebooted, and checked the
firewall settings again. Two of them had the check mark back, so apparently
those must be required.

I believe those are the ports for MSN Messenger.

What I don't understand is why these ports get re-checked upon reboot.

Are they necessary for system operation? No.

I also don't understand why MS makes it so hard to remove messenger from your system either.. It's almost as if they're forcing you to use it.
