XP file explorer crashing

R

rarewolf

The XP computer accommodates muliple users and this particular problem
seems to be associated with a specific user (me), as opposed to any
other user or the administrator. The file explorer will simply crash,
ask that info be sent to MS, and then closes all other file explorer
windows -- and sometimes the desktop too. The problem persists
accross logons and re-boots, and is frustrating while I try to get
work finished.

It took me several days to get thru a suggested list of cleaning
tools, but I
am now more satisfied than before my computer is clean -- leastwise
the adminstrator logon -- because I am now in my own logon and the
problem persists.

I had 2 failures this morning, and the event viewer for "Application"
events, for each failure it lists 2 'Error' events.
The errors show the following text:

time 10:04:39:
"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting
module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00001010."

time 10:04:44:
"Fault bucket 479124178."

time 10:54:52:
"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting
module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00001010."

time 10:55:48:
"Fault bucket 479124178."

The DLL, ntdll.dll, is in the 'Windows\system32\' directory, and I
have no idea what its function is.

Comments ... thoughts ... suggestions??

TIA )

Do you get the problem if you create a new User Profile for yourself?

I'm quite reluctant to create a new profile, ... while I was hoping
someone would recognize the problem via the events' errors.

I do have an additional clue ... it seems that the problem will always
happen when I copy a file from one location and paste it into
another. I'm off to another search, and I'll post back here if I find
or remedy anything.

I would create a new profile if only to test out whether it solves the
problem. Keep your old profile until you know the answer.

It's just that I don't know where a new profile would get me(?) That
is, there are a number of different profiles on this computer, all of
which I have access to because I manage this computer (microscopy lab
context) ... and none of them besides mine have this problem. What
would it mean if I created a different profile, even for myself, and
it also didn't present this problem? How does it solve anything? I
don't mean to be confrontational, but why create another profile, when
in all probability, it will show no problems and provides no remedy
for the profile in question?

Thank you anyway for your interest ... it IS appreciated!

You need to eliminate the possibility that the User Profile is
corrupted. If a new profile works without any problems then its a fair
assumption that your old one has corrupted in some way and is best put
in the trash can. It is just not worth the effort to try to fix a
corrupted profile when it is so easy to migrate to a new one.

You have been trying to resolve your problem for approaching 2 months.
If my suggestion succeeds then it will enable you to move to pastures
anew. Why do you feel the need to fix a corrupted profile?

I feel a need to fix a corrupted profile because the remedy is most
likely a lot simpler than migrating to another profile, and having
confidence that the migration included everything associated with the
original. I was surely hoping, given the tools and evidence provided,
that someone would recognize what was going on. On the other hand, if
that's not the case, then it would appear that migrating to a
different profile is the only remedy .. even if it will help no one
else having the same problem.

Regarding "Do I get the problem if you create a new User Profile for
myself?"

I just created another acnt, and it has the same problem ... ie, the
XP file explorer will crash everytime I paste files into any
location. I have also just checked a few of the other acnts on this
same computer and they have the same problem. It seems that the only
acnt that does not have this problem is the 'administrator'(?)

If anyone has any additional ideas/suggestions, please keep them
coming.

I have new information!

When I give the rrant user profile admin privileges, the problem will
not occur. It would seem that for these user profiles, explorer.exe
want to change something it has no right to ... what could it be? I
saw a reference somewhere to the C:\temp\ directory, but I gave
'everyone' full rights to it.

Please advise ...

Problem fixed!!! :D

I finally was able to trace the problem to a file in the root of C:.
The problem was caused by installing HDD's free hex editor, and it
apparently creates the file "C:\trace.txt" which wants to be modified
frequently when using explorer.exe. You can either uninstall the hex
editor, or give everyone permissions to change the file.
