I am getting a blue screen error message upon startup
"unmountable_boot_volume" and "stop" with a series os numbers. Is there
anyway for a layperson to correct this?

I have the same problem.

all i know is that your file system on your c: drive has crashed and
all the info on that drive is gone. this happened to my laptop the
other day.

All that i could do was reinstall windows and tried to recover all the
info i lost. still looking for a program to recover my Oulook Express
emails

It is very possible that your hard drive has crashed and you need a
replacement drive. But it is also possible that your drive has corrupt
information in its bootsector. Just pop in your windows CD and boot from the
CD(may need to set thet BIOS to do so) when windows comes up with the first
prompt hit the R key then select the c:\windows partition and enter your
administrator password if you have set one up. Type "chkdsk /p" (without
quotes) when this is finished type "fixboot" (without quotes) This will
repair your boot and is quicker than a chkdsk /r if this does not fix the
problem then load back into repair console and run the "chkdsk /r" (without
quotes) A repair install is not needed.
