XP: DVDs readable but CDs not!?

M

Marc Girod

Hello,

The CD/DVD drive on my Windows XP started to fail reading CDs (both
audio and pictures), whereas DVDs are still readable.
I don't clearly know even when it happened, but recently.

What can I do to narrow down the problem?
Is it possible that the driver is in a state expecting only DVDs?

Thank for any hint.

The drive probably has failed.

DP> The drive probably has failed.

You mean: "hardware failure, buy a new drive"?
Is this thus a possible hardware failure? What discriminates CDs from
DVDs from the point of view of the hardware?
