I have a Dell Latitude running Genuine XP Pro w/SP2

My Disk Defragmenter does absolutley nothing

I have followed the instructions on microsoft kb922379 but when I try
to install the dfag.inf file I get an error that says installation

Any Ideas?

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze in Disk Defragmenter
(dfrg.msc).

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the service starts, click OK |
Close Services | Reboot

Now try defrag. If it still does not work, try...

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

You should get a RegSvr32 message: DllRegisterServer in dfrgui.dll
succeeded. Click OK.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

You should get a RegSvr32 message: DllRegisterServer in dfrgsnap.dll
succeeded. Click OK.

Then navigate to C:\Windows\Inf ...
Start | Run | Type: %windir%\inf | Click OK |
Locate dfrg.inf, right click on dfrg.inf and click on Install

Hope this helps. Let us know.

A couple of more things to try.

Go here...
How to fix Disk Defragmenter problems in Windows XP
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/60/1/How-to-fix-Disk-Defragmenter-problems-in-Windows-XP.html

And look for the....
Alternately, you can reinstall Disk Defragmenter using the following
command:

Click Start, Run and type:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\dfrg.inf

The line wrapped because there is a space in it.

Note if having disabled or set a low custom size for the pagefile, then
defrag might not work. If using WinXP set the virtual memory to "System
Managed Size".
26. Repair Disk Defragmenter in Windows 2000/XP
http://smallvoid.com/tweak/winnt/install.html#DEFRAG

How to do that...
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Under Performance Settings button | Advanced tab |
Change button | Select: System Managed Size | OK your way back out
