XP Disconnects from VPN intermittently

I'm running a number of Windows XP clients connecting across ADSL lines to a
VPN server running Mac OS X Server (10.4.5). The clients make PPTP
connections to the Apple server, and then access resources on the local
network, including file shares on a Windows SBS 2003 server. The users are,
for some reason, getting disconnected from the VPN after a while; sometimes a
few minutes, sometimes as much as eight hours. The OS X server logs report
this:

Wed Mar 29 10:01:42 2006 : DSAccessControl plugin: User 'username'
authorized for access
Wed Mar 29 10:01:42 2006 : MPPE 128-bit stateless compression enabled
Wed Mar 29 10:01:43 2006 : found interface en1 for proxy arp
Wed Mar 29 10:01:43 2006 : local IP address 192.168.1.2
Wed Mar 29 10:01:43 2006 : remote IP address 192.168.0.221
Wed Mar 29 10:23:26 2006 : No response to 5 echo-requests
Wed Mar 29 10:23:26 2006 : Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Wed Mar 29 10:23:26 2006 : MPPE disabled
Wed Mar 29 10:23:29 2006 : Connection terminated.
Wed Mar 29 10:23:29 2006 : Connect time 22.1 minutes.
Wed Mar 29 10:23:29 2006 : Sent 540230 bytes, received 359336 bytes.

My servers are behind a Draytek NAT router, but I've tried it with a Netgear
too, so it's unlikely to be the router. Some remote workers use NAT; some
have directly-connected (USB) modems. All use XP Pro SP2. Since they can
connect and use the system for a while before it chucks them off, I'm not
sure how much of this is network-related. I've asked about on the Apple
forums but I thought I'd check here if anyone's had similar experiences/knows
of a useful fix for Windows XP. I've checked idle timeout settings, but the
fact that it's not disconnecting cleanly and that the XP box seems to be the
ones dropping off suggest a Windows problem. Any help would be welcome, as
I'm approaching my wit's end with this issue...

It could be the MTU issue. this link may help,

VPN connection is disconnected after serveral minutes VPN connection is disconnected after several minutes. We have been seeing more and more cases like this one. We don’t really know the causes, ...
