XP direct to LPT1 port and a Windows defined printer for LPT1

Using Windows 95, I was able to output to a printer direct
to LPT1 and also have a Windows printer defined for LPT1
even though I did not use the Windows printer. After
moving to XP, I can output to a printer direct to LPT1,
however, if I define a Windows printer on LPT1, then all
my print that I try to send direct to LPT1 does not
print. Does XP not allow direct to LPT1 print and a
Windows defined printer for LPT1? The data stream that I
send to LPT1 is received and formated by the printer
attached to LPT1. Windows printing is not required for
the direct to LPT1 output. I need the Windows printer
defined on LPT1 for another application.
