xp crashed, unable to boot

What happened:

I was deleting a user account when xp (home, not pro) froze and the computer
stopped responding. Had to shut down by turning off the power and now the
computer will not boot, not even in safe mode. Attempts to boot get as far
as the screen asking me if I want to try last known good configuration, safe
mode, etc. No joy with any of the options there; the computer tries to boot
and gets as far as the aforementioned screen, whereupon the cycle repeats.

I am hoping to resolve this problem without losing my data since I haven't
backed up files in a while (slaps self repeatedly). I found this possible
solution and would like a second opinion before proceeding:

Does this look like a good approach, and if not, could someone point me to a
better one?

Thanks in advance to all who reply.
