XP Client on 2000 Server - DNS problem?

B

Bob

I have a 2000 server with AD. An XP client can not get to
both the active directory and the Internet at the same
time???

If I set the AD machine as the first entry in DNS, it can
get to all shares, etc., but can then not get to
Internet. Similarly, if can see the internet, it can not
see network drives.

Many 2000 workstations have no problems with the 2000
server and AD.

Any help wold be greatly appreciated!!!!

Are you running NAT on the Server?

The biggest problems have the simplest solutions...

After many hours of head scratching (not to mention a few
choice words) the solution appears to simply be to
set "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the server. (Do not
use "Use NetBIOS setting...)

XP Client boots faster than ever before and can access
everything.

Congrats on solving the problem. However the solution has got me
bemused. Firstly, I don't think that you should need NetBIOS over
TCP/IP. Secondly, my first thought was that you had not set up the
forwarders on the DNS on the DC. This however doesn't square with
other machines being OK. Thirdly, you say that you set the DC (which
presumably has DNS) as the *first* entry in DNS. What is the second
entry? It should also point to an *internal* DNS. It should not point
to an external DNS as this could cause long logins.
