XP Clean Install

After formating my hard disk (virus or worm problem) How do I install XP again.
I boot with a diskette enabling the CD player. but running setup comes with error that this programme runs on Windows and not DOS.
Is the XP CD bootable? If so How do I boot from it ?
DO I need to change BIOS?
How does one clean install XP- I am tempted to install the old Windows 98 first and then install XP but that is not clean intall.
Your help will be appreciated

is your xp disc an upgrade? if so you will have to install
windows 98 first.
Otherwise, use a boot disk to change the settings to boot
from the cd first, not the floppy. Then it should boot
from the cd and begin installing.

Sorry but that's complete nonsense. Unless the qualifying product was on a
recovery disc, reinstalling it is NEVER necessary - you simply insert the CD
when prompted during the installation.

Secondly, your second statement is also nonsense. You do not "use a boot
disk to change the settings to boot from the CD first" - you change the
order in the BIOS - all XP CDs are bootable, boot disks are obsolete.

You do not need a floppy disk to install XP unless your computer will not
allow you to boot from CD. Enter the system BIOS and enable 1st boot to CD.
The XP CD is bootable and provides all the tools you need to install XP. See
the following link for instructions on a clean install of XP. You do not
need to install a former OS, just have the qualifying disk handy. You will
be prompted to insert it, sometime during installation of XP. Detach all
peripheral devices except your mouse, keyboard, and monitor before
installing.

Congratulations Miss PT, you have said something useful for a change. As
usual though, it doesn't help the OP in the least, it just corrects and
belittles the other responder.

It is. You set your BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk; hit the
appropriate hot key at power on, and either a Boot Page or entry on BIOS
settings.

First make sure that you *have* to do it this way; mostly you can use
tools to clear up viruses without having to burn down the forest. Then
make *sure* you have the 25 character Product Key (an awful lot of
people seem not to take 'Do not lose this number' seriously). And backup
all data

Then Boot the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license
agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC;
select and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be
formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

I'm always helpful - whether you choose to see it as such is your problem.
As for it not helping the OP, I also dispute that. If he'd listened to
whoever, he'd have spent several hours wondering why he couldn't change the
boot order with a boot disk and installing an OS he didn't need to.

And if he didn't want to be "belittled" maybe he should have done his
homework before posting such utter rubbish!
