xp cd burning problems

Just curious... I have never been able to successfully run XP's CD burning
software. Well, I suppose this is a little inaccurate, as the Wizard does
actually run, but it never successfully burns a CD. I'm confident this is
not my build of XP, as I've formatted and reinstalled probably about 10
times over the past 3 years. I've gone through 2 cd rw drives, so I'm
thinking it isn't my drive, but obviously it's possible. The only message I
get when the wizard fails is something to the effect of "The CD could not be
created. Your CD maybe be unusable." Is XP's built-in software inherently
crappy, or is it likely something is wrong with my configuration?

It does work, so this implies a system-specific fault. 3rd party burning
software can conflict with the built-in burner.

I've never had any 3rd-party software installed, because I try to use
built-in features as much as possible. Without any 3rd-party burning
software (or legacies of installations) present, do you know of anything
else that might cause problems?

Have you tried slowing the recording speed ?
[in Explorer R-click on dirve -> properties -> recording
tab -> select a slower speed and try it.
also different CD brands use different dyes, try
different brand.

It has trouble with some drives, and sometimes ends by failing to finish
the session of burning off correctly. The one adjustment I suggest
trying is to go to My Computer - r-click the drive, Properties and on
the Recording page set the speed to a realistic manual value, well
within the capacity of the drive *and* of the blanks you use.

If it works - fine. If not, cut through and get something else, which
will be much more comprehensive anyway.

These are unbranded, blank-face CDs, so I don't think labeling would be an
issue. I will change the speed and see if that helps.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately as far as my media resources are
concerned), the CD isn't burned at all. The process fails after it creates
the image. The CD is still usable after all is said and done. Guess I may
have to break down and get Nero or Adaptec or something else if changing the
speed manually doesn't work.

I just got an update on the 19th this month, from Microsoft update, which is
titled "HighMAT extension to Microsoft Windows XP CD Writing Wizard" and is
able to be uninstalled too!

Check it out there may be help yet, but if not, try rerunning the wizard
anyway!
