XP Boot Problems

I have Windows XP Home and had problems with reloading after a major failure.

This resulted in an abortive attempt to load and register and then
eventually a further successful attempt.

I am now faced with one configuration but 2 options in the boot.ini file.

This does not self correct despite there only being one operating system
loaded and I can find no way of removing the offending extra load option from
start up.

Can anyone advise how I can remove this without a further rebuild? I just
want to avoid the 'option' to choose the system or the long wait to time out.

I have tried the dos prompt and the edit function, but it refuses as a read
only file. I have tried replacing the file but this does not work.

msconfig does not allow a delete option - just ordering the process.

You should be able to edit the boot.ini file with notepad and remove the
line that is wrong
or duplicated.

Check All Boot Paths

Start | Run | Type: msconfig | Click OK |
Boot.ini tab | Check All Boot Paths button |
A dialog box will open detailing the location of any invalid operating
system locations | Confirm you want to remove the entry and reboot

[[Check All Boot Paths - This button will check the boot paths for all
operating systems listed in the BOOT.INI to ensure they point to a valid
operating system. ]]

If there is only one you will get:
It appears that all BOOT.INI lines for Microsoft operating systems are OK.

A dialog box will open detailing the location of any invalid operating
system locations.

Similar to this...
-------------------
It appears that the following line in the BOOT.INI file does not refer to a
valid operating system:

"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional " /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn"

Would you like to remove it from the BOOT.INI file?

Hope this helps. Let us know.
