XP as a Router.

Hello,

I would like to use a machine with XP as a router since i dont have a router
for the time beeing.

The situation is this: I have one pc with xp SP2 that has an dsl modem
atatched to it and connected to the internet. In my network all computers
have static ip's and the computer with the modem is the gateway for all
other computers. (i have ics active in the computer with xp so tha the other
computers in the network can acces the internet). I dont want to use IIS but
instead i want to redirect calls on port 80 to another computer inside the
network, as well other ports to other computers in the network. Basicaly
what i want is that my machine with XP (the one that does the ICS) work as a
router - forwarding ports to the network. Notice that the XP firewall is
active for both nic (ethernet and dsl modem).

Thanks.

Just set the Windows XP computer to pass port 80 to whatever computer
you want. This is handled through ICS. Don't remember the exact steps
off the top of my head and I'm headed out (booted into my Linux box
right now.) Look around in the ICS settings, it is not hard to find as
there is not that many. There is a list of services that you can setup
or you can add services. Just pick the port and enter the IP address of
the destination computer. If you want to access this computer from
outside your network remember that you will have to setup the DSL model
to pass port 80 to the XP computer. You don't need IIS.

Get a cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41. If your DSL uses PPPoE it will make the
connection. The devices are easy to use, allowing share the one WAN connection with up to
253 LAN nodes, come with 4 x 10/100Mb/s Ethernet Switched ports, DHCP server, and will act
as a simplistic FireWall.

The cost is low and the energy consumption is low. Well worth its use.

And yes, it can port-forward TCP port 80 to a specified LAN node.
