Hi =?Utf-8?B?S2VubmV0aEJvaG1hbg==?=,
Does word 2003 both read and write XML files?
Word 2003 standalone, Office pro, and Office enterprise can
work with XML. Office standard cannot.

Word 2003 can open any XML file, but it's questionable
whether you'd find the result useful. Word has not been
turned into an XML editor. What MS did was make it possible
to set up XML documents, combined with XML Schemas, that
can be opened in Word to either
- gather input (later to be extracted)
- streamline using the document, by creating a
SmartDocument solution in VB6, .NET, or another programming
language

Plus, Word has it's own XML "dialect" that let's you save a
document in XML so that it can be read by anyone. And it
lets developers create Word documents by writing them in
XML.
