.xls extension vs .xlr

I am using MS works suite 2001. previously excel used the
extension xls. now it is using xlr and will not read .xls
files. how do i get it to read xls and how do i get it to
write xls so others can read my files?

Save in Works as Excel format if possible, lotus format or in last case, comma
sep. values

MS Works Suite 2001 does not contain Excel. It contains a Spreadsheet
application, but not Excel.

You must have MS Excel standalone or MS Office Suite with Excel.

*.XLR files are Works SS files.
