x64 ultimate install from x64 home premium cd and ultimate 32 key

Here is what I want to do:

Install vista ultimate x64 on my computer.

Here is what I have:

vista ultimate 32 cd and valid key
vista business 32 cd and valid key
vista home premium x64 and valid key

Is this possible:
boot from home premium x64 cd and type in my ultimate key to install
ultimate??

I have heard that the key is the same for 32 or 64, the real question is
does the home premium cd have all the editions on it.

Curious

The 32 bit Vista installation DVDs will install what ever version of Vista
32 bit you have a key to install on either a 32 bit or 64bit capable system,
The Vista 64 bit install DVDs will only install the 64 bit version of Vista
on a 64 Bit CPU system.

Yes, if you have an x64 RETAIL dvd you can use it with your Vista Ultimate
full edition product key to install Vista. All retail x64 dvds are the
same. It is the product key that selects the edition while the x64 dvd
automatically installs the 64bit version of whatever edition the product key
is for.

Is your Vista Ultimate a standard license (aka "full") or upgrade? What
does it say on the box? Are your dvds all from retail, boxed copies of
Vista?

btw, you keep mentioning "cd". I assume that is just an oversight. There
are no Vista x64 cds.

Thanks for the correction... DVD's !!

I got the ultimate from school. The dvd is the may 2007 Systems Student
Media. Vista ultimate upgrade.

The home premium is an oem copy from newegg and I just noticed it says:
"Includes Windows Anytime Upgrade"

I am going to give it a try, I will let everyone know how it goes.

Don't bother.

Not sure why you are so pessimistic Colin.

The installer took the key and windows activated with no problems.

Thanks for the help I guess...

I agree with suss.

This pessimism isn't what I'm used to seeing you act like.

The combination of media and product keys is such that for all I know WGA is
going to bite him down the line or he may start getting reactivation
messages. My first reaction was that the keys would not mesh. I am
surprised that they did. But all may not be well. We'll see.

Media doesn't matter when it comes to Vista.

OEM and Retail CD's are one and the same and only the specific key chooses
what the installer does.

If the installer validates the key for an x64 install then it's valid.

I meant DVD's, but now I do believe you're nitpicking and it's not funny.

Especially not funny since DVD's are still based off the Compact Disc
standard, and by definition are still in the CD form factor.

I've known you for quite some time Colin and honestly you're behaving quite
oddly here.

Having said that I also notice your latest post doesn’t have the MVP stamp
next to it.

Hmm.

Hmm.

He's not used it as yet to my knowledge. He may just choose to
continue posting without it. More power to him.

As far as I can tell that has something to do with whether or not my WM has
got me logged into the community servers. It is unpredictable. You'll see
it vary on some MVPs. I wish they would just fix stuff. That has been
going on since the MVP bug was introduced more than a year ago. It's
supposed to just be there. Oh well.

Hi,

All versions of Vista are on a retail disk, your product key unlocks the
features of the version you purchased. If you have a Vista Home Premium
disk, then you should be able to upgrade to Ultimate with it. What you would
need a separate disk for is if you wanted to switch between 32 and 64 bit
versions. As well, if the disk is a manufacturer's recovery set, it would
also not be able to be used for an upgrade to another version.
