X Box 360 Controller not working on Windows xp based CPU

i have an X Box 360 controller i have installed the program offered by
microsoft allowing it to run though windows xp....however windows still
doesnt recognize the hardware when i plug it in....i have read all the
articles that windows has to offer about this topic and i have found no
answers......i am working on a Windows XP Professional Dell Inspiron 2200
computer...the xbox 360 controller is a wireless controller what came with
the xbox 360...the wire used to hook it into the USB is a charge and play
wire that hooks into the top port of a xbox 360 wireless controller and into
the USB of the xb360 or computer.....any help is much appreciated

Do you have service pack 2?

The wireless Xbox 360 controller is not supported on Windows XP PCs (only
the wired version is supported).
