I expect that the upgrade will work, in spite of the
different languages. However, I have never tried
this myself.

To get started, run this command: d:\i386\winnt.exe.

Windows XP is written in specific language versions, therefore one
cannot upgrade from one language version of Windows to another. You'll
need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP in the language version
you desire, reformat your drive and install it "clean".

Or if you have an available empty drive or partition, you can install
another "Full Version" of Windows XP in a different language version
and create a dual-boot configuration.

A good third-party partitioning program is Partition Magic 8.

You cannot upgrade or convert from one language version of the OS
to another, so you'll have to use the full version of WinXP (in whatever
language you want) to perform a clean installation. Use the copy of
WinXP you have to create a bootable installation CD.

language you want) to perform a clean installation. Use the copy of

I think this is the only solution, and that was my first attempt, however:

Toshiba doesn't provide the winXP installation CD. Instead its "Recovery
DVD" is a ghost image including the clean winXP installation and the folders
of the winXP installation CD (Folders i386, Support, and Valueadd). I've
tried to create a bootable CD from these remnants, to no avail... I don't
have the win51ip.sp2 file :-(

So, two more questions:

1. Is there any chance to get the winXP CD from the store I bought the laptop?

2. The win51ip file is a text file with only the word "Windows" inside it.
What are the contents of win51ip.sp2 file?
I've tried to burn a CD with "Service Pack 2" as the contents of win51ip.sp2
file to no avail...

Thanks for your response

You can do it this way: (If you have the patience)
1. Extract the i386 folder
2. Backup the system & Verify
3. Format the drive this way
|| ----------NTFS-------|| -FAT32-||
^Set Active^
4. From a DOS-Boot Floppy w/CD support copy i386 to
the FAT32 partition. Make sure the Floppy has Smartdrv
on it.
5. CD (Change Directory) to the i386 folder
6. Invoke the DOS level XP installer module Winnt.Exe
7. Ensure that the NTFS partition is shown as C: drive when
presented the destination folder
