wuaudt.exe problem

Windows XP (Home) SP2
When I boot my computer and use it off-line, there is no problem. However, when I log on-line there is a period of time when my computer is inoperative. Using Task Manager I have determined that as soon as wuaudt.exe loads, the computer reverts to normal.
I have discovered that wuaudt.exe is a part of the Microsoft Windows operating system and deals with instigating automatic updates for Windows (http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/wuaudt/).
This problem has only become apparent recently, is it a result of recent updates?
What can I do to resolve this problem?

I think I have found an answer to my problem; turn off Automatic Updates in the Security Center.
