WTF is the dialog about the dialog?

B

Bernie

I've seen it several times and I think most commonly when AVG gets an
update. Normally it then installs the update and a messagebox pops up
saying it has installed quite happily and would you click ok to
continue. But before that last messgebox comes up I get a dialog from
Vista saying something like "an unknown dialog has tried to communicate.
I don't know what program it is from and I don't know what the message
was but I thought I'd let you know" Then the actual dialog from AVG pops
up. I click ok and the AVG dialog goes away. Then the Vista dialog says
"Err it's okay now the dialog is no longer trying to get your attention".

Now what is all that about?

I can't give this a specific articulate name Bernie, but part of UAC no
doubt if this last dialogue is not part of AVG/Grissoft. I have seen a lot
of dialogue boxes from UAC but I'm not sure I've seen that. I'm using Avast
on Vista consistently because it seems to be doing fine--and I haven't had
any perceptible slowing from it that some people complain about or any cuts
into CPU that slow things down.

Why don't you put the exact message up. Bet we can google it, google it in
conjunction with the search term UAC or permissions or find an explanation
possibly on the UAC blog.

You could also put it on the UAC blog as a comment and probably get a pretty
informed response.

I will give the exact message if I see it again. It has happened several
times in the last week but I turned off UAC today and haven't seen it
since. It may or may not be to do with that. It isn't a dialog from AVG
itself.

I don't remember the exact message but figured others will have seen it
to and would know what I meant.

UAC is turned off. This occurred at startup. AVG is set to check for a
definitions update between 10.00 and 12.00 and as you can see the
machine was started up during that time window.

There wasn't a problem with AVG. I think this ISDD thing might be a
little too earnest.

I don't see why it would be bad form. This is about supporting Vista and it helps to see what you are meaning. sometimes people get into long explanations of what they see when a simple screen shot would get the job done much faster.

I hope it is no longer considered bad form to post pictures to this kind
of newsgroup....

The problem here is a bug in the antivirus program.

In Windows Vista, services cannot interact with your desktop. They operate
on a different desktop.

The antivirus program's service tried to display a message to you anyway,
which showed up on the other desktop and not yours. Windows Vista realized
this and offered to switch you over to the other desktop so you could
interact with the program.

As it happened I didn't click to check or cancel and the second dialog
appeared. Next time I'll try the check and see what happens.

If I manually tell AVG to check for an update it does so and displays
it's own dialog boxes without any problem in the same way that it would
have done on XP at startup.

Oddly enough as I was writing this I just had another such incident. AVG
had completed a scan. What happened was the screen went completely black
for about 15 seconds and then the Interactive Services dialog came up to
say that some unknown program couldn't display it's dialog. Then without
my input the AVG scan complete dialog appeared. Clicking okay on that
made the second Interactive thing appear again and clicking that
eventually got me back to my own desktop. Yes there was a clue there
that what I was looking at was a different desktop but it switched to it
automatically this time.

It is not very elegantly implemented and when you aren't expecting the
screen to just go black for no apparent reason it is a bit alarming.

This does not bode well for an awful lot of software that was not
written according to the latest whim of MS... even if that whim has been
documented for a few years.

Presumably this is an example of where a shim might be needed. Is there
any documentation on rolling your own shims?

The common courtesy in the ng's is to use an attachment and warn in the subject line that a pic file is included so that those on dialup or toll services can bypass the download.

Yeah that is why I asked. But do such poor people still exist in the
world in this ng?:)

C

It's not their poverty. Better services simply aren't available. Andre
Decosta is on dialup from Jamaica (I believe).

I'm just reporting what MrDee has said from time to time. We kept asking
him why he kept fading in and out all the time. :)

Dial-up, toll service., I don't know anyone who uses them.

The web interface that MSFT hasn't lifted a finger to fix in years is
