The popular WS_FTP LE product has officially been replaced with a new
FTP client -- WS_FTP Home.
..... snip .....

Question: Is WS_FTP Home a free FTP client?
Answer: No, but neither was WS_FTP LE. Ipswitch made WS_FTP LE
available free of charge for educational users at degree-earning
institutions only. However, WS_FTP Home is available as a free thirty
day evaluation from Ipswitch's Web site:
http://www.ipswitch.com/_download/wsftphome.asp

So now the old "free for non-commercial" use is replace by 30 day
evaluation.

What is NOW the best free ware FTP program?

Absolutely WRONG. WS_FTP was free for personal home use. I installed it
under those terms, and I have no qualms about continuing to use it under
those terms.

I have no comment on continued use ;)

The way the license reads now though, I can't host/distribute it at FW4U
any longer. Evidently, IPSwitch *changed* the WS-FTP LE license. It did not
used to read as it does now.
http://www.ipswitch.com/support/LE_license_agreement.html

I removed it from FW4U.

This is a shame. WS FTP Lite is the FTP client I use. I hope my
copy doesn't become obsolete for some reason.

I know **I** do. 12/30/99

It's all over the ftp sites of the world. This is not an
**insurmountable** problem. And I now have server space to
post it :^)

Cheers!

Just looked at the license on my installed version ... 5.08:

"LICENSE"

"Ipswitch grants you a non-exclusive license to use the Software free of
charge if a) you are a student, faculty member or staff member of an
educational institution (K-12, junior college, college or university); b)
you are a United States federal, state or local government employee; or c)
your use of the Software is exclusively at home for non-business purposes."

I bet I have an old version with the original EULA you could put on your
site. :)

I thought of archiving it awhile back. Redistribution is not allowed
however, due to the export restrictions. I'll be happy to email anyone
here a copy licensed for home use: v5.08 2000.02.23

"Ipswitch grants you a non-exclusive license to use the Software free
of charge if a) you are a student, faculty member or staff member of
an educational institution (K-12, junior college, college or
university); b) you are a United States federal, state or local
government employee; or c) your use of the Software is exclusively at
home for non-business purposes. Government contractors are not
considered government employees for the purposes of this Agreement. If
you do not meet the requirements for free use of the Software, you
evaluate or purchase a license to WS_FTP Pro, a commercial version of
this product."

"SCOPE OF GRANT. You may:
· use the Software on one or more computers;
· use the Software on a network, provided that each person accessing
the Software through the network must have a copy licensed to that
person
· copy the Software for archival purposes, provided any copy must
contain all of the original Software's proprietary notices.

You may not:
· permit other individuals to use the Software except under the terms
listed above;
· modify, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble (except
to the extent applicable laws specifically prohibit such restriction),
or create derivative works based on the Software;
· rent, lease, grant a security interest in, or otherwise transfer
rights to the Software; or
· remove any proprietary notices or labels on the Software."

The problem in making it available on the internet:

"EXPORT CONTROLS. None of the Software or underlying information or
technology may be downloaded or otherwise exported or reexported (i)
into (or to a national or resident of) Cuba, Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia,
North Korea, Iran, Syria or any other country to which the U.S. has
embargoed goods; or (ii) to anyone on the U.S. Treasury Department’s
list of Specially Designated Nationals or the U.S. Commerce
Department’s Table of Denial Orders. By downloading or using the
Software, you are agreeing to the foregoing and you are representing
and warranting that you are not located in, under the control of, or a
national or resident of any such country or on any such list."

the freeware version was no longer available.

Another contender, not sure I like it though - I've used FileZilla for
ages, and it seems to do pretty well for me.

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/network/fwftp.html - a good
selection, including Core FTP Lite which was mentioned earlier.

A lot of them look very much like WS_FTP LE - and now I remember, I
prefer MORE panels than that style has - to some degree, I basically
picked Filezilla originally because it had the best licence terms -
open source, and now, I just like it.
