wrong info on Help instructions

robin

it says this:

To view the progress of a scan

1.. Open Windows Defender. (Click Start, click Programs, and then click
Windows Defender.)
2.. If a scan is in progress, the progress is displayed until the scan is
complete. If the scan is complete, the status will display the scan results,
and the date and time that the scan completed.
NO DATE just a time- again unless you go into event viewer which is a real
dumb place to go look to see if it did a scan, you have no idea if it
actually did a scan.

This needs to be fixed.

I have at the bottom:
Last Scan: Today at 12:00PM (Quick Scan)

umm it said that when i turned my computer on at 8am today- lucky i went
into to event viewer to see if it actually scanned. This is NOT good
because if it is having a problem the user will not know and you will not
know if it is actually protecting you.

Hi Robin,

I'm not here to say that your complaint is totally without merit, but I do
have some counter points to make on the subject.

I personally don't find anything problematic with this function in Windows
Defender. The word "Today" means exactly what it implies..."Today". The
word "Today" stays in the Status screen for 24 hours after a scan is run on
your system and is then replaced with the Date of that scan after the 24
hour period.

If you are scanning every 24 hours, the word "Today" never has
the opportunity to change to a Date instead of the word "Today". However,
if your scheduled scan time is greater than ever 24 hours(once a week),
then the word "Today" is replaced after 24 hours with the actual Date of the
last scan.

Your premise that this is problematic seems to be based on your distrust
that a scan is actually taking place on a 24 hour basis. When you looked
in the Event Viewer and you saw that a scan did indeed take place at it's
scheduled time, even this fact does not seem to dispel your distrust that a
scan will take place as you have it scheduled.

I don't use the program to scan automatically, I prefer to use it to run a
manual scan periodically. As an example, I ran a manual scan on Sunday(June
18, 2006) and at that time the Status window showed the word "Today" after
the scan was complete. But on Monday and again this morning if I open WD it
shows my last scan with a date (6/18/2006) and not the word "Today".
Given the way I use WD, this functionality works just fine and as it was
intended to work I believe.

So the way you have WD set to run scans(every 24 hours), if you ever see
anything other than the word "Today" in the status window then there would
be cause for some concern that your scheduled scan is not taking place.

For those of us that scan manually on a periodic basis, or for those that
have there scheduled scan set to something greater than 24 hours(once a
week), this function in WD works as it was intended to work.

So while I don't agree with you that there should be a change in this
functionality in WD, I would agree with you that given the fact that the
word "Today" never has an opportunity to change to a date for those that
schedule a scan every 24 hours could be better explained in the Help
section.

My two cents worth:blush:)
