Wrong domain name change in TCP/IP settings. Cannot login!

We have the following problem:

We have an office that consists of 2 computers (1 laptop
with win2K professional and 1 WIN XP workstation) in a
subnet that is connected to a university network.

We only have 1 FIXED IP address so we use a Gateway/router
(D-LINK DI-604) to connect to the university network.

The D-LINK router gives out IP addresses dynamically to
our 2 computers in the subnet.

Both computers TCP/IP settings were updated to get an IP
address dynamically (i.e from the D-LINK router). This
worked fine.
We can use the internet and network printers...

Unfortunately the TCP/IP settings on the laptop computer
were changed so that the Domain was no longer used and a
work group was defined instead. Now the user CANNOT log on
to that computer because it seems that its not a local
user but a user for the domain.

Do you know how we can recover from this situation?

At login (using the known username and pasword) we get a
message something like. User account is blocked. Contact
an Administrator.

Please can you advise?

Unfortunately the Network Identification settings on the
laptop computer
were changed so that the Domain was no longer used and a
work group was defined instead. Now the user CANNOT log on
to that computer because it seems that its not a local
user but a user for the domain.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

What is your login account?
Have you tried Administrator?

The login account is a user who before he mistakenly
changed the domain to a work group could:

login to the network and also login when he was
disconnected from the network.
Now he cannot login at all.

He was trying to change the domain to a workgroup so that
the subnet users would be in the same workgroup.

When he tries to logon there is no fields for domain or
workgroup.

He has tried:

username@domain_name and then his password. Where
domain_name is the domain that was stated in his Network
Identification settings and also

domain_name\username and then his password.

Then he gets the standard message that the
username/password or domain could be incorrect.


When however he tries just his username and password he
gets a message something like User account blocked.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Apparently he was tryng to backup his files from his
laptop to another computer in his subnet. So he changed
the domain to a workgroup the same as the other computer
he was copying to.

Is it possible to connect to a domain when he has chosen a
workgroup in his Network Identification settings?

He has a meeting on Monday and had files he needed on his
laptop.

I hope you can help

He would be able to access resources (map drives, printers, etc) using the
same user name and password that exists in the domain as a local account on
the laptop. In that case, you would have to create an identical account on
the local machine (laptop).

But he cannot "login" to the domain if the laptop was disjoined from the
domain because AD will not recognize the laptop as a trusted member. For
that functionality, you would have to rejoin the computer to the domain.
That's the only answer.

I am assuming that the administrator (or equivalent) account on the local
computer is lost? If not then you can reattach the computer to the domain
with this account. You will then have to back-up and restore the user's
profile, the old profile will not be useable.

If you no longer have the admin account access... and as most systems
passwords are no recoverable. Your only recourse that I am aware of is
remove/delete the SAM.

Since the machine is no longer a part of the domain, using domain accounts to logon will not work. You must use a local account to logon to the machine now.
By default there should be an administrator account on the box. If you know the password for this account, logon with that account. If you don't know the
password, there simply is no way to recover without a reinstall. If you need access to the data that is on the system, use a parrallel install (installing into
another directory other than winnt) on the system. This way the data will not be lost.
