Wrong Automatically Assigned IP Address

J

Joel

I have 4 computers sharing an IP address via a router
serving as a hub and an Internet connection sharing. 3
machines operate correctly; the 4th returns an incorrect
IP address even though set to obtain IP address and DNS
automatically. ipconfig reports the "Autoconfiguration
IP Address" as 169.254.xxx.xxx. All others report
correctly the "IP Address" 192.168.123.xxx

What does the "Autoconfiguration" mean and how can I
correct it to obtain address from the DHCP router?

While on the private network by itself, do you get a
response when you ping localhost?

With the 169.xx address, the computer cannot see the
router or other computers. If I manually assign a 192.
address, then I can ping the router and access the other
two computers but cannot access the internet. Even when
I assign the DNS listed in the router status along with
the static IP, access to the internet is not possible.

Good evening,
It would appear that the machine is not talking to the network
correctly. The 169.x.x.x address is the "standard" address assigned by the
MICROSOFT under Windows XP when the system can not obtain a real address. I
would (1) check the cable connections. Is the light lit on your router port
and on the NIC card. (2) Is the speed (10/100) correct. both ends need to be
the same. Have you enabled the port on the router to talk? (that is you have
not disabled the port for some reason. (3) is your router setup for DHCP? .
Sometime
folks use fixed IP address assignments for the desktop systems then forget
to enable DHCP service for the node that comes in (like laptops) so it never
gets a good IP address.

Good Luck,
Supertech

1) I can manually assign an IP and then connect to the
router and other computers 2)Speed is auto negotiate and
reported as 100 on both ends and 3) router is set to
Enable DHCP-- I can connect any of the other computers to
that router port and they work OK. I have double checked
that the TCP/IP settings on all machines are identical.
The problem persists. All machines are desktops and set
to automatically obtain IP address. Broadband connection
is Comcast cable, so there is no fixed IP available.

Sounds like your computer is not refreshing if all cabling
is correct and ok. Try this:
1) ipconfig /all (record ALL ip settings)
2) ipconfig /flushdns
3) ipconfig /registerdns
4) ipconfig /all (compare to the original ip settings,
have they changed????)

JIM

See if that helps.... Sometimes I have found that if you
manually force the refresh all is fine from then on....

the advice to flush all the caches is good, but if this
doesn't work, you say that using a manually assigned
address gives access to the other pc's but not the
internet - have you configured the default gateway with
the internal address of the router?

Thanks for the advice. I flushed the caches and then
rechecked the configuration. (This with the settings set
to automatically obtain addresses) The settings did not
change, i.e., came back with the autoconfiguration 169.xx
ip address. In answer to your question, yes, I entered
the router internal address as the default gateway when I
manually assigned the address. So far, nothing has
worked. Next step is to reinstall Windows XP. I tried
roll back to prior configuration to no effect. I'll keep
you posted on the results.

Hello Again,

Before the reload have you tried switching ports with one of the systems
that does obtain a good IP? you may just have something messed up in the
router.

Autoconfiguration IP address is the default IP address set by Windows if the computer isn't assigned (or can't get) one at startup using DHCP. Two things to try are
1) 'release' and 'renew' the IP address using either the 'ipconfig' prompting sequence for NT,2000,XP, or the 'winipcfg' prompting sequence for win98 from the DOS command window. 'ipconfig /release' then 'ipconfig /rene
2)set a static IP address in the 'network connection' TCPIP properties that is in the same subnet as the router ( ie: router 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 then use 192.168.0.32 for the client machine) and set the router's address as the 'default gateway'. Be sure not to assign one that is already in use by another machine

Usually releasing/renewing will take care of it, if there is nothing else wrong with the Ethernet connection
