Wrong account selected when replying to email messages

Running Outlook 2003 with SP1 (also Business Contact Manager installed). I
have 6 different email accounts created, with one of them selected as my
default. When I reply to one of my incoming emails, the account selected does
NOT use either the default account, or the account to which the email was
sent; appears to select one of the accounts at random. Please advise.

Check if any of your accounts require authentication and if they do set
authentication on them.

According to Earthlink's email configuration site, their instructions
indicate that I should have it enabled. I checked my settings and NONE of my
accounts were set up with authentication. I made the necessary changes to all
the accounts. I closed Outlook, reopened it and selected a previously
received email. Tried using reply and saw the same "random" choice of
response.

Another idea?

Done. Log file has been sent to you directly (don't know how to upload a file
to the discussion group).

Yes. I turned on logging, accessed 3 different emails that I had received,
selected reply, and noticed that the replying account was incorrect.

There never was an actual "error" that I received - its just that the
account used to reply to the message was NOT the one to which the email was
sent. The log recorded the events without any correction by me.

Sorry I can't be more descriptive of the problem. My workaround is that I
must manually select the replying account for EVERY message I reply to.

I have yet to completely uninstall Outlook 2003 and reinstall, for what its
worth.

I have exactly the same problem and can't work out how to resolve it. It's
very irritating isn't it! Microsoft please note.

Has anyone figured this out? I am having the exact same problem using
Outlook 2000. I am not running Exchange. This is very frustrating as I use
multiple accounts for work and sensitive information is getting replied to
from the wrong (non-default) account (and hence responded to).

Well, its now 2005 and I thought I would check back to see if there had been
any progress. I am still having my original problem... as Pink Floyd asked
"is there anyone (with a solution) out there?"

Epiclectic, are you saying that the account specified in the infobar on the
message ("This message will be sent via ...") is incorrect, or that the
account in the infobar is correct but the message is sent on a different
account?

Lumsgal, if you're in corporate/workgroup mode in Outlook 2000, Exchange
will almost always send the message itself, regardless of anything you do.
Outlook 2000 just didn't handle multiple accounts well in
corporate/workgroup mode...

The first scenario you describe is my problem. I read a mail message that
was sent to "mymail1" and when I select reply, the message bar says it will
be sent via "mymailx". There is no predictability on which address is used.
And it does not default to using my default account, fwiw.

Sounds like a problem someone else posted to the group recently. Do you
happen to have several accounts that all point to the same mailbox at your
ISP (i.e. they all have the same incoming server and username)? If so, and
if all those accounts are set to receive mail, then it's a toss-up as to
which account any particular message will be received on. Outlook replies
based on the account on which a message was received, not based on the
address to which the message was addressed.

I think you hit the source of my problem! In examining my Outlook accounts,
I had set up each of my aliases as well as the main mailbox to check each
time I send and receive. However, since they were all aliases to the same
box, it was probably an exercise in redundancy for me. I have now used the
Send/Receive > Settings > Define Send/Receive Groups > Edit to be more
specific on how to interact with the server.

I have set up one of my aliases as my default email address. It is set to
send and receive. For each of my other aliases, and the main mailbox itself,
I set them to Send only.

Now, when replying to a message in my inbox, my default alias comes up
consistently each time. When I am responding to one of my other alias
messages or the main mail box address, I simply make sure to change the
account accordingly.

I appreciate your help and at least have a logical explanation that I can
understand. Going forward, I will probably go easy (if not eliminate) the
use of aliases.
