~WRL and ~$ Desktop File Icons in Word 2000

G

Gregg Fox

When I close document files created in Word 2000, other
file icons in a grayed out state appear on my desktop.

These file names always mirror the names of my actual file
but are preceded by ~WRL or ~$ and sometimes have a grayed
out Adobe Acobat icon on them.

What are these and how can I stop them from showing up?

Thanks,
Gregg Fox

Gregg,

Whenever a word session begins, word saves a temp file of
the open documents to the directory indicated in your user
preferences. Although you can clean these files from time
to time, it's a good idea to keep them in an area away
from view, like your desktop. Change the location where
they are being saved by clicking...

Tools | Options | File Locations: select AutoRecover Files
and click modify. Point to the directory of your choice.

Actually, these files are always created in the same folder as the document
(you cannot specify where they will be created). If the document is on the
desktop, that's where the temp files will be. They should be deleted when
you close the document, though.
