Dell XPS Gen 4, XPS Pro...new as of Dec 2004

I am supposed to havae in system 32 the following wpa files : wpa.dbl and
wpa.bak. PC's note to litself that it has been activated. Thhis mentioned in
several puter books and forums

Only thing near I have is one WPA in System 32 which properties show is a
..dbl file

Any ideas why I do donot have the two listed files ?

Could it be that I have a Del puter with OEM Win XP Pro and activataion
was done by Dell prior to shipment Dec 2004...

I'm not overly concerned about this but just wondered why I don't have them

Any comments appreciated

Thanks in advance

For deacoder,
I am certainly sorry that I caused you such trouble and heartache to find
the extra a and the extra h in my message
I was under the ,probably wrong ,impression that one could seek honest help
and not caustic comments such as yours. which aad absolutely no bearing on
my honest request.

Could be - Dell's copies of XP are pre-activated. Or it could be that you
need to use Folder Options> View to show hidden files and folders *and* to
show system files. Once those settings are enabled, hidden system files
should come into view.

You seem to have Hide extensions for known file types enabled.

Hide extensions for known file types
[[Hides the last part of a file name, reducing clutter in folder windows.]]

You'd be better off if you can see the file extensions.

Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
View tab | UNCheck: Hide extensions for known file types |
Click Apply | Click OK

Now your WPA should appear as WPA.DBL.

..BAK files are backup files.

The WPA.BAK file could have been deleted with some kind of utility program
such as Disk Cleaner, EasyCleaner, Empty Temp Folders 283 or similar.

..DBL is a Windows XP Product Activation File

[[Usually found as WPA.DBL in the System32 folder. Windows will often
complain if you change too many hardware items on a computer (or change
computers) and you need to reactivate the product. Some people have found
that you can go to the Windows\System32 folder and copy the file WPA.DBL
(and any backups of the file) to a floppy disk or CD and after the hardware
change, reinstall Windows and when booted into Safe Mode, copy the WPA.*
files to the System32 folder on the newly-configured hardware and not have
to go through the reactivation step. Others have found this does not work.]]

I don't have a wpa.bak file either.

I only have two .bak files on my machine and there are reasons that I even
have those two.

DATA.BAK, related to MS Word, if this gets deleted then Word wants to be
reinstalled.

insider.bak, related to MS Money, if this gets deleted then Money wants to
be reinstalled.

Yes, I discovered both of these the hard way. ;-)
