working network and bad internet connection

I have a home network connecting to an SMC router. This consists of a wireless XP laptop, a win98 laptop and an XP desktop. All were working fine until a couple of days ago.

The problem: XP desktop cannot access the internet (including IE, kazaa and Outlook). However, the network is still available and files between computers can still be shared. Also, both laptops can still access the internet. The only thing that I can come up with is that I have a virus or Spy-bot (spyware removal software) removed a critical internet component.

Any suggestions would help.
Thanks,
Dave

Any luck? I have similar problem. Linksys router cabled
to XP desktop, 2nd XP desktop is wireless, XP notebook
with wireless card. All worked fine since installation.
Now notebook won't connect to internet even though
wireless connection is there.

When I use the notebook at the office it connects to
internet by dialup and then shares connection to desktop
through nic card.

Any help from anyone greatly appreciated.

Dave,

Please describe "cannot access the internet". Try accessing
http://my.yahoo.com/ then try http://66.163.171.129 - what error
message do you get in each case?

Please provide ipconfig data for each computer. Start - Run -
"ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad -
copy and paste into your next post.

Search your entire system drive - including hidden and system folders
for "hosts". The only legit copy will be in ...\system32\drivers\etc.
Look inside that copy (use Notepad), see if any interesting entries in
there.

Check for spyware. Use HijackThis, Spybot S&D, and expert advice at
SWI Forums (all free). Complete instructions are available at:

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
