Hermione,

Here are a few websites with good tutorials:

I can help diagnose your problem, if you will provide ipconfig information for
each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

The most likely problem is that a firewall is blocking access.

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers, and tell it that they
connect to the Internet through a residential gateway (router). That
will make sure that XP's built-in firewall doesn't block access.

If you've installed a software firewall (Norton Internet Security,
McAfee Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm, PCCillin, etc):

1. Make sure that it's configured to allow access by computers on the
local area network.

2. Disable XP's built-in firewall.

Hi Chuck

Sorry for the delay, but i'm writting from work:

<SNIP>

OK, Hermione, no sweat.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Did I get the names
and ip addresses right)?

Copy the code, precisely as it is keyed, into Notepad. Ensure that Format -
Word Wrap is not checked.
Save the file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please.
