Workgroup

I have been having network problems - nothing appears in WORKGROUP. As an
experiment, I decided to disconnect the network to see if a shared resource
(a shared folder) on my computer would appear under WORKGROUP in
MyNetworkPlaces. My computer has a name & has been assigned to the work
group WORKGROUP. Am I correct in assuming that my computer & its single
shared folder should appear under WORKGROUP even if the network wire is not
plugged in?

Have you enable the sharing? If you do, you should be able to itself in workgroup.

OK, now I can see my computer's name & resources under WORKGROUP, but I cannot see the other computers on the network. My computer is the newly added WinXPHome computer which replaces a Win98 machine. The other two machines on the network are Win98 & Win2KPro. Previously all three machines (2 - Win98's & the Win2KPro) shared resources without a problem. I doubt it is a physical cabling issue because all machines share a single internet connection & that worked immediately on the new computer without a problem.

Additional info: XP's firewall is turned off, Norton Antivirus uninstalled (caused original problem)

I can successfully ping each computer with the other by specifying the IP address but not by specifying the computer name
