Work menu in Excel?

G

Why ain't the work menu available in Excel? It doesn't make much sense if you ask me!

Anyhow, any ideas as to how to implement this functionality?

Very handy feature in Word. It's a menu where you can add the documents you work most frequently with. Much better than the Recent Files features because if you open other, infrequent ones, the ones you really want do not get pushed off the list..

In Excel's Open dialog box, in the 'My Places' bar at the left, the
History folder should contain a much longer list of recently opened
document.

Or, you can create a folder, and add links to the documents you work
with frequently.

They did ... but perhaps just under a different name!

I'm not familiar with what you're talking about in Word, but XL *does have*
a special file for grouping WBs together for fast and easy access!

It's called a "WorkSpace" file.

Here is a copy of what XL (XL2K) Help has to say:

WORKSPACE -
Save a group of workbooks in a customized workspace
You can open a group of workbooks in one step by creating a workspace file.
A workspace file saves information about all open workbooks, such as their
locations, window sizes, and screen positions. When you open a workspace
file by using the Open command (File menu), Microsoft Excel opens each
workbook saved in the workspace. The workspace file does not contain the
workbooks themselves, and you must continue to save changes you make to the
individual workbooks.

Open the workbooks you want to open as a group.

Size and position the workbook windows as you want them to appear the next
time you use the workbooks.

On the File menu, click Save Workspace.

In the File name box, enter a name for the workspace file.
Tip To open the workbooks each time you start Microsoft Excel, save the
workspace file in the XLStart folder in your Excel folder. Save only the
workspace file, not the workbook files, in the XLStart folder.

Well, the first solution is way too long and the second not that elegand...
I was hoping someone might have a macro ready for that? Or a plugin maybe?

Really, though, I can't understand why they did not implement it to Excel...

Well, unfortunately this is not what I'm asking for... there's another relevant option to this, the "Open files in specific folder" (or something like that) in the Options dialog. But I don't want to open all the files at once, I just want quick access to the most frequently used ones..

Thanks anyway :

Ah now, this is great indeed -exactly what I was looking for!
It works, but with two problems (not sure if related or not):
-When I fire Excel up, VBA gives me a run-time error 1004: "Method 'Rows' of object '_Global' failed. In debug I see:

Set workRange = .Range("A2", .Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp))

Any ideas what's wrong with that line?

-If I click "End" it loads up ok but it does not display the filenames of the added files until I perform an action (like try to add or remove something). Maybe it's got something to do with the VBA error, maybe not?

Thanks a bunch tho!

Yep, there is a dot missing, it should read:

Set workRange = .Range("A2", .Range("A" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp))

Thanks, Jan Karel.

I've updated the darned thing a dozen times since I posted it, but
haven't gotten around to putting the updated copy on my site yet. A lot
more user friendly now (i.e., it hasn't crashed on me for at least a
couple of months). I'll have to "finish" testing soon.

Ah, there's a coincidence... rushing to grab now
(and a wish: maybe it could be made so as it doesn't ask for confirmation about the hidden cells in every single sheet? Maybe a "Yes for all" button?

Kind regard

You're *not understanding* what this is saying!

You open the WBs that you wish to group together, from any file, in any
number.
You name *this* Workspace* file, so that it can be called up easily, with
*just* the files that *you* placed in it.

You can create *another* Workspace file, with a different group of WBs, and
give this a different descriptive name ... and so on ... and so on.

So ... what's wrong with this?

For one thing, there's no way to keep it easily to hand from a menu. For
another, I don't think the OP wants to open multiple files - rather just
be able to always find particular files on a menu.

Workspaces and the Word Work menu are *very* different things.

Well ... like I said at the outset John, I'm not at all familiar with the
Word product, but there's a few folks around here that use the XL Workspace,
and they seem satisfied.

Of course ... they may not know what they're missing out on.
What do they say? Ignorance is bliss!

Well, the way I see it, there's absolutely no meaning in defining a workspace with just one file. How does this save time? I just call up the file itself instead of the workspace!

On the other hand, Workspaces behave like files in the File menu -that is, they stay in the Recent Files list just as long as you don't open other files; hardly what I wanted, which was to ALWAYS have access to specific files... Maybe I was clearer now? :)
