Words breaking in text boxes

HELP! The text box word wrap is breaking words in non-sensical places with
no hyphenation. For example "is" will be broken into "i" at the end of one
line and "s" at the start of the next.

Also, when bullets are off, the Left justified text box will only justify
the first line. All others will be indented a few spaces.

Any suggestions? These issues are making my presentation completely
illegible.

Bill Dilworth

Good Morning,

I do not know for sure, but I'm going to suggest a possibility for the first
item and a recommendation for the second.

I going to guess that the text that is in the text box was copied and pasted
there, perhaps from a web page. Often, what looks like a space character is
not one. If PowerPoint is looking for a space character to break the line,
but does not find one because the black characters are really something that
only looks like a space, it will do what you are describing. Try deleting
the space before and after "is" and re-typing them manually. Does this fix
the wrap problem?

The ruler function in PowerPoint is the easiest way to control the indents.
Try turning it on and adjusting the arrow-like thing-a-ma-bobs on the ruler
bar (when you have the text box selected).

and...

Do you have any "right to left language" active?

Do you have in "Language configuration", Japanese, for example?

You can remove Japanese from the list in Language configuration... (or any
"right to left language" if you don't need it)

Cordialmente

I have the exact same problem with some Power Point and Word templates in the
Office 2007. Text just breaks at the end of the line like this:

Original text: "This is an example of the word breaking phenomena"

Assume line ends in the middle of the word "Phenomena":

This is an example of the word breaking ph
enomena

Can't find a solution for a long time...

So did you try any of the suggestions to resolve the problem that the

Hi,

I have the identical problem. The text was cut from a word document and
pasted into a powerpoint text box.

I went back and verified that spaces are spaces in the text.

Any other suggestions?

thanks in advance!

Did you try the various suggestions offered earlier in the thread? Seems
lots of people (well, three at least) report this issue and we offer
suggestions, but nobody comes back and tells us if they tried any of them or
if any of them actully worked....

Yes, I did try them all before posting here. I am not sure I folowed the
instructions for the "right to left language" perfectly, but I tried... no

Okay, thanks for confirming. We just never know, you know? :)

I'm surprised the printer driver didn't fix it. Someone once sent me a slide
that exhibits this problem -- and they luckily sent along a screenshot of
what they see, too, because I didn't see it on my computers here. The words
didn't break mid-word here like it was doing for the user.

That leads me to think it's a printer driver issue, especially if it's PPT
2007, because PPT 2007 is so very dependent on the printer driver for its
display.

What is the language setting for your textbox? If you select it and go to
the Review tab, you can see the language settings there.

Sorry for the double posting, but I may have misspoke

1- system is XP Pro, and PPT 2003 sp2

2- not all text boxes in the slide have the problem

3- copy-paste of a "good" text box, followed by copy-paste of text from MS
word or another program, cand and does result in the line breaking problem

4- the text boxes have other weird behavior, such as the observation that
any text pasted inot them- whether paste or paste special unformmated text-
appears as 17 pt arial superscipted.

thanks in advance

Sorry I haven't responded.

Enric sent more complete information on the language thing he mentioned. I
just haven't had a chance to think through it yet and post instructions.

In a nutshell, try enabling Japanese and changing the option to allow a
break. Go to Start | Programs | Office | Microsoft Office Tools | Microsoft
Office 200X Language Settings. Choose Japanese and add it to "enabled
languages."

Then go to Format | Line Spacing, and there should be another option -- LIne
Break. This opens a dialog where you can uncheck "allwo latin text to wrap
in the middle of a word."
