I have lost the WordPad print preview toolbar text. I just see symbols
(like marlett ttfont) in both the preview pane and the "save as" window that
follows it. The actual preview is alright and in the correct text. Can
anyone tell how I can recover what is presumably a corrupted wordpad file?

Re my own message below, I should add that the problem also happens with MS
Paint, i.e. curious toolbar symbols in the print preview window:

eg: II[P] instead of text in first (lefthand) toolbar box of the print
preview window.
