Wordpad problems in XP Pro?

RJ

I am working with an RTF file that I can open in Notepad
on my XP machine (it looks ugly, of course) but when I try
to open it in Wordpad the document is empty. I have
successfully opened the file in Wordpad on my WIN98
machine.
Anyone else have this problem? Or more importantly, know
a solution?

RTF is a specification which describes how to store documents with text
properties, e.g. font, bold, formatting, etc.

My hunch is the RTF file is "broken" and Wordpad can't read it to
translate it from RTF to present it on the screen. My hunch is that it
became broken when you edited/saved it in Notepad. What you see when you
open an RTF file in Notepad is the "source code" RTF coding. Not sure I
would call it "ugly" since it is what it is. My hunch is that the file
is now corrupted and not recognised any more as a RTF file.

Try renaming the file as "x.txt", open it in WordPad and see
if it opens. Edit it as needed and then save it as .txt.
Then open it again and "save as" "rtf x.rtf" and see if
that works.

It is possible your WordPad is damaged, does it open other
..rtf files? Not sure of the fix for WordPad, perhaps
Kelly's Korner has a fix, or try "sfc /scannow"
