i am looking for a way to have some text in the footer of each of 50 or so
word files be changeable globally and without having to open each file and
make the change manually. in my cad software, we have what is called an
external reference that is a separate file (the source file) that can be
inserted into an unlimited number of other cad files. changes to the source
file will automatically register in all the other cad files which use this
file as an external reference.

your help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Insert an IncludeText field in each footer (or, if the documents haven't
been created yet and they'll all be based on the same template, put the
field in the template's footer). The field should contain the full address
of the external source file.

If the source file's contents are changed, that change will appear in each
document as you open the document and update its fields. (But read
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330079 about when fields are updated... you
may want to create a Document_Open macro in the template to force updates to
be done as each document is opened.)
