Word won't open -- says system resources low

Word stopped working today. It won't start up. Says system resources are
low close an application. There aren't any applications running other than
desktop/explorer and systray with clock and volume. A check of system
resources before attempting to fire off Word indicates that only 20% is being
used. So what happened? Did get a system hogging virus that runs when Word
is started?

Thank you, Cornell! Had a similar problem with Word 2000 & Normal.dot. Your
