Word Templates

I have Microsoft Word 2002. Every time I go to close the
program, I get this message:

"The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace
the existing file?"

I clicked no and then it brings me to a "save as"
window. I clicked cancel and another question is asked:

"Changes have been amde that affect the global template,
Normal. Do you want to save those changes?"

Then I clicked "no".

The program is closed properly. However when I close the
program again the same thing happens and I perform the
same response. I don't know why it keeps on doing this.
I open up Word either by the icon or by "new office
document".

So, I have a couple of questions:
1) What is a template? Global template?
2) Is there a chance that I may have changed this
template Normal?
3) Most importantly, what can I do to stop this
message from popping up...again?

Thank you!!!

The file name Normal is referring to the Normal.dot file. This is a
template file that contains the blank document that you see when you first
open Word. My guess is that when you are saving your document you are
saving it as a template or .dot file instead of a .doc file, which is a
normal word document file, hence the questions about replacing the
normal.dot file.
