Word Stalls Every Few Seconds

Every few seconds, Word stalls. The hour glass shows up for three or four
seconds and then a few seconds later the same thing happens ad nauseum. This
really slows down the system ( Windows 98 , PIII733 256MB RAM ). Frequently
the cursor disappears.
I shut down autosave, autochecking and everything except for antivirus and
the basic services. It still runs doggedly slow. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

AntiVirus software is a prime suspect for such cases. Try disabling the
Office plugin if you're running Norton AntiVirus.
