word reading layout

every time someone send me a word document as an attachment it always opens
in reading layout. this layout often misses out text and is not ergonomic.

i have changed the settings to enable it to open normally but each time i
shut down it defaults back to the reading layout.

how can it be changed permanently? it is upsetting my customers and also my
staff as it is a pain to keep having to manually adjust something all the
time, every day.
