Word/Outlook Express spell checker

I was under the impression that Outlook Express's spell checker used the
same dictionary as Word. If that's so, why don't some words which I've
added to the Word custom dictionary get recognised by Outlook Express? Is
it significant that all the words which aren't picked up have umlauts?

I'm using Word 2000 and Outlook Express v6.0, under Windows ME.

Many thanks,

MS Office Outlook will work with spell check when MS Word (of the identical
version) is used as the E-mail editor. Your impression was just that!

Outlook Express *does* use the Office proofing tools, and I think it may
well be significant that words with umlauts are being ignored; perhaps a
change in the Format | Encoding setting (or a change from Plain Text to Rich
Text) would make a difference.

Suzanne,

Thanks for the reply.

In the settings in Outlook Express, you mean? Unfortunately, I already have Encoding set to Western European and Rich Text selected. It doesn't seem to help.
