Word opening files Read Only when not

I have a user using MS word XP sp3, win2k workstation opening files from a
win2k server sp4. She opens .doc files and they are coming up read only, even
though nobody else has them open, or the read only attribute is not set. If
she closes the .doc and then reopens there is no problem. Anyone have any
ideas what is causing this. Also, is there a way that you can be notified
that when opening an office document it is opening read only?
