Word not saving

I have Windows 7, along with the newest version of Office, and my Word
document just quit saving. This is my PhD thesis, and I've just lost a day's
work. This is on a new HP computer. I "saved" repeatedly, but nothing saved
after 1 pm EST today. Help!

From where did you open the document?

For and important document like that you should save it with a name/number
that is incremented by one each time that you save (or at least at regular
intervals, so that you have a series of back-ups in case the worst happens.
