Word/Excel should let me rename my document while I am editing

Renaming a document is one of the most common things I do day-to-day, and yet
in all this time there's never been a feature as simple as File --> Rename to
rename the document I'm currently editing. Instead, we have to save the
document, close it, rename it in explorer, and then re-open the file.

Just save it with a different name. No need to close it to do that. If you
want to delete the originally named document, you can then do that at your
leisure.

Hi Doug,

I'm aware I can do that. It's just not the same thing as renaming, because
I have to go and do the cleanup you described, which seems unnecessary.

I'm pointing this out as an obvious, simple feature that we should expect
applications to provide, but they typically don't. Instead, they make us go
and do the work

Not to mention that a file Saved As loses some of the properties of the
original file. But from what little I know about file handling in Word (and
Windows), I just can't imagine that it would be possible to rename an open
document any more than it would be to move it. In fact, even with a document
closed, if you are using Preview view in the Open dialog, you will probably
not be able to rename it (or even delete it) because Word considers it open.

Hi Jared,

In a workgroup situation, where files need to be properly indexed, the capacity you ask for could cause havoc. It can also break
links between files etc. So, in general terms, it's better to require people to use the tools provided by the OS for such
activities. Besides, why build into the apps functions that properly belong to the OS?

The reason is the temporary lock file which opens with the document and
restricts the opening of the document to the current user. You can always
close the document and rename it from the file open dialog.
