Word document changed in email - can't find

J

Janiegirl

I received a message in email with a word document
attachment. I opened the attachment in email and made
changes. I saved the changes along the way within the
document - I did not save it to my own computers word
documents. I closed out the document and the email and am
unable to locate the document. Have I lost it completely?
Please help.
Thank you very much!

Yes. If you open a document directly from an email (instead of using the
much safer and better "Save to disk" option) and don't immediately Save As
to a document folder, the copy you are working on is saved to a temp folder.
When you quit Word, it is deleted. This is just one reason why we recommend
using "Save to disk" instead of "Open it."

If you open a message directly from an e-mail message, then it opens as a
temporary file with a temporary name in the user's temporary file area,
usually C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp (or a sub
folder of that folder). If you are lucky, it may still be there. If not, and
you haven't deleted the e-mail, the original unedited version should still
be attached to the message.

As you will have gathered, this is not good practice. Save documents to your
hard drive before opening them.

Hi, Janiegirl. If you saved the document, it may still exist in a
temporary directory on your hard drive. Do you know the filename? If
so, see if the file is in your Most Recently Used file list (in Word,
click on File, and there should be as many as nine most recently used
files listed at the bottom of the menu). If it's there, open from the
MRU list, then save it to where you want it. Good luck!
