Anybody ever heard of an error that when you make a new
word document and try to rename it you get the following
error..

If you change the filename extension it may become unstable.
Are you sure you want to change it ?

I run Windows XP Pro

Happens to me all the time, and not only with Word docs.
It's not an error message, just a warning to not toy
around with the file extension. Just rename the doc to
whatever you want, but leave the file extension as is

If you have XP set to display known file extensions, include .doc in the
rename. Example: document1.doc would be renamed to document2.doc If you
leave off the extension, you'll get the warning that you're seeing.

If you are hiding known file extensions, including the extension when
renaming is not necessary. XP will fill it in automatically.
