Word doc permissions from HTML link

Quick question I can't seem to find a previous reference to: I've got
a MS Word doc linked off a secured intranet HTML page. I want the
group who has access to the page to be able to modify the .doc working
copy I have linked there. Whenever anyone opens the doc from the HTML
page, it opens as "read only". If I open it from the server's
directory where it's stored, it opens with full permissions. I've
played with all the permissions and the document currently has a "no
restrictions" designation. What triggers the "read only" status of the
doc when viewed from an IE browser? Thanks. Coff

The reason you may view and edit the document is because the server
source origination is on your machine.
HTTP was not created for these methods.

The only possible solution to your dilema is:
1) Either you set up a network using software designed for such things.
2) either your provide your server address and password to everybody you
desire to edit the page (tongue-in-cheek).

All users have to do is save the document to their local machine rather
than attempting to edit the page through HTTP and their browser.
